Fitness and wellness in Versilia

Nightlife in Torre del Lago is indeed fun, but don’t forget that too much relax can ruine months of winter hard work done in your local gym! So, how can one combine the fitness to the fun? Here are our tips!

First

Challenge yourself in any sport played on the beach, don’t just lay in the sun or catwalk along the shore looking for hook ups. Volleyball or soccer, choose your favourite, there are often tournaments both at Mama Beach and at the free beach nearby. Avoid a men VS women tournament (lesbians are far too strong!) as well as straights VS gays. Go for the old Lumbardy VS Tuscany…

Second

Book a tennis match in Torre del Lago (Tennis Club Lagomare, 0584-341489), or a horseback tour of the pinewood (Associazione Ippica Burlamacco, 0584-387553).

Third

Prove yourself with some heavy shopping! Shopping in Versilia is not only bargain and fun but also a good time to hook up. Martkets are open in Torre del Lago on friday and sunday morning, in Viareggio on thursday and in Forte dei Marmi on wednesday and sunday morning.

Fourth

Keep doing some excercise in one of the many gyms in Versilia. We suggest you the one on the gay-friendly bathing establishment “Bagno Balena” which boasts with new equipments and swimmingpools. Bagno Balena is in Viareggio, in Viale Marconi 42, tel. 0584-44045.

Fifth

Choose one of the itineraries suggested in the “Nature&Ecoturism” section: a six hour tour in the park of San Rossore or a trip on the Apuan Alps Natural Park. Visiting art towns can be interesting and a good way to keep in exercise. Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano and Volterra are worth the walk!

Sixth

If you are not into fitness maybe you are into wellness! Tuscany is rich in wellness centres, your only “hard work” is to choose your favourite SPA! Here are a few: the thermas at Bagni di Lucca (www.termebagnidilucca.it), Casciana Terme (www.termedicasciana), San Giuliano Terme (www.termesangiuliano.com) and Uliveto (www.termediuliveto).

If you are looking for something really fascinating and relaxing, our personal suggestion is “Grotta Giusti” in Monsummano Terme which is only 50 kilometres from Torre del Lago. Grotta Giusti is one of Nature’s gifts to man. Starting from the entrance through to the deepest part of the Grotta, three different zones are crossed, each one increasing in heat, which tradition has named Paradise, Purgatory and Hell. Wonderful stalactites and stalagmites hang from above and spring from the ground, and a picturesque small lake, the waters of which maintain a constant temperature, both in winter and summer, of 36°C, pervades the whole environment with its steam, thus inducing a profuse perspiration. The steam of the rich thermal waters generates a natural “bath of health” which detoxifies the organism for an overall sense of well-being.

In addition to the steam baths, Grotta Giusti Spa offers mud therapy, ozonised baths in thermal water, thermal pool, massage, inhalation treatments and a wide selection of tailor made packages according to each personal requirement.
